uses of structural insulated panels

19 April 2014 by Superior Panels

The changes to the Building Regulations in 2010 did not only affect doors and windows, but also the structural insulated panels, pressings and flashings that are required to complement them.  These too became subject to building regulations and had to have particular thermal properties to complement the aluminium products they were being glazed into.

Structural Insulated Panels can enhance a building, whether old or new

Aluminium panels have always been a good insulator, mainly due to the wide variety of insulation available. For this reason they have for years been used in building construction.  Aluminium is the material of choice for curtain walling, windows and doors and aluminium panels also enhance and work well with them.
However, aluminium panels can also be used as a cladding and construction material to bring older buildings back to as new without the need for expensive rebuilding or construction work.

Do you rebuild or do you renovate with aluminium cladding panels?

All old buildings will age and decay over time.  Whilst construction methods today give buildings a typical “building life” it is generally accepted by the owners that in the years to come the building will require some form of renovations.  The most expensive type is obviously to rebuild.  Items such as cracked brickwork or masonry, stained external walls, general decay are all issues.  These are faults not necessarily with the product itself, but merely effects of time, external weather and other factors.
The re-cladding with new structural insulated panels is by far a more cost effective option than expensive construction work for the renovating of older buildings.  The panels are constructed as bespoke cladding panels to bring a new facade to any old building.

What is Cladding?

Cladding is a commonly used practice where a particular building material is placed over another.  This can have several uses, whether it is for aesthetic reasons or  to act as the external skin like any building that requires external protection.
When used for aesthetic reasons, aluminium cladding panels are an important feature in bringing the desired look to a building.  Curtain walling is an excellent example where it can be enhanced with the use of aluminium panels.  Aluminium panels glazed into curtain walling can add colour, bring a contrast to the large amount of glass typically used in curtain walling as well as act as a visual barrier between concrete floors or structural steelwork that does not need to be seen from the outside.

So why are aluminium insulated panels the first choice for cladding and aesthetics?

The modern construction processes used in aluminium insulated panels whether for glazing into curtain walling or for external cladding now mean even more advantages for refurbishing older buildings. Superior Insulated Panels use the latest manufacturing methods to create moisture and weather resistant panels.  Our processes produce insulated panels of the highest quality and long life that make them ideal for cladding or refurbishment.

The Advantages of Polyester Powder Coated Aluminium Panels.

It is the powder coating of aluminium panels that further adds to their diversity of use in construction.  Panels are powder coated to the same exacting standards as the architectural aluminium extrusions. What’s more they can be powder coated to meet the needs of extreme environments such as severe weather, coastal erosion, chlorine environments and much more. In these applications aluminium panels can be offered with extended guarantees of up to 30 years or more.

Our Insulated Core

Depending upon the specification, there are many insulated cores available.  Styrofoam is one of the most commonly used types well known for being very cost effective yet providing very good thermal properties required in a panel.  Styrofoam is also well known to have a compression strength of high values, a long service life, moisture absorption is very low and has an excellent surface that lends itself to the bonding process used in panels.
